The Grateful Dead in Concert. Photographs of shows from 1971 through 1979. Organized by date and named by venue and location.
There is still some work to do with these. Shea's for example is woefully incomplete. New scans of the entire four rolls of film shot that night. A weeks work.

1 imageThe Grateful Dead on Stage at Yale Bowl in 1971. A single scanned frame from a strip single of Tri-X film given to me years ago by a friend who I can not currently contact. He told me that he did not shoot the film but aquired it from the photog but can't remember last we spoke who that is. So it's here and a rare photograph of this show, for sure.

9 imagesThe Grateful Dead Live at Springfield Civic Center, Springfield, MA Wednesday 30 June 1974. This summer the Band traveled with the Wall of Sound in it's reduced size road show configuration. Here for your viewing pleasure a few photographs of this show. I did not shoot a lot at this show and what I did was on the fastest film available at the time. Restricted by distance and lens focal lengths as well. There is another roll of 120 roll film not yet scanned to be added to the mix at a later time.

76 imagesThe Grateful Dead Live at Dillon Stadium, Hartford, CT Wednesday 31 July 1974. This year the Band traveled with the Wall of Sound in it's reduced size road show configuration. Here for your viewing pleasure - all my photography of this show - The Grateful Dead performing, the stage, rigging, lights and sound systems from afar and about 100 feet from the stage. Many include great detail of the crowd. Seen here - The crowd outside the gates waiting, inside the stadium milling around, roadies setting up, Wall of Sound and gear shots, The Dead playing the first set early on, in daylight and later under Candace Lights. Four rolls of film were shot and every good image I captured at this show is here. Custom made Prints are available of all these photographs. Pricing depends on the subject. Crowd, Roadies and Gear shots from 35mm film are not considered 'limited edition' prints though will be signed but not numbered and have a different pricing structure. Square images - Hasselblad camera captures - will not be cropped unless requested and are limited edition images. Additional print sizes are on the way for square format images. If your confused, give me a call. It is confusing. Also, Silver Gelatine Prints of any B&W image can be ordered. Contact me regarding available papers, sizes, the cost and my darkroom schedule. At the tail end of this gallery are 13 great photographs - close photos of Jerry that I couldn't get from where I was - shot by my great friend Mike Thut. You can place a print order here for Mike and he will custom print and ship to you personally. You can find him at www.terrapinstudio.com

10 imagesGrateful Dead Concert at Colt Park Hartford Connecticut on August 2, 1976. A few shots of the band close up as best I could get into position considering the crowd. Others from back where we were taping the show. One of Candace at her board (needs serious retouching) and a couple more crowd show. I have some B&W film of this show as proven by the one old scan here - I need to find that roll and revisit it.

27 imagesRoosevelt Stadium August 4, 1976. Photographs taken during the day in the hours leading up to The Grateful Dead Concert. Views of the crowd, friends, and general goings on. Of interest, the light and sound crew booth. These are all the photographs from a 20 exposure roll of Kodachrome 64. Wish it was a 36 exp roll, was too conservative with film in my youth. To this Gallery I am adding a selection of newly scanned images which do not appear on photog.com/gdead. This single image tacked to the end of this gallery is one of my favorite Jerry Photo's from this night.

21 imagesThe Grateful Dead play The Springfield Civic Center on April 23, 1977. Here are the "Live in Concert" images of that show shot by Jim Anderson while taping the show. Newly scanned negatives and slides have been added to the 5 original scans that were my only shots of this show on the web until now. There is also a series of B&W images taken around the venue before & during the show. Two are shown here. More to come. All Photographs here are available for purchase as Limited Edition Signed Original Photographic Prints hand made by the Photographer. Either order directly here by credit card or go to photog.com/gdead for more info on mail order.

34 imagesThe Grateful Dead play the New Haven Coliseum for the first time on the 5th of May 1977. These are restored images from my archives. Some images are of what I originally considered fail shots. Artistic liberty and digital processing gives them a new life. Except for the last 3 shots, outside before the show and the inside shot of the Coliseum interior, all are from one roll of Kodak EPT slide film pushed 2.5 stops, which is extreme to push slide film. Two things happened when I did that: 1) you saw more of what was In the Dark 2) you got tons more grain (now known as noise, but exactly the same thing). Enjoy !

25 imagesThe Grateful Dead live at the old (before the roof collapsed) Hartford Civic Center, Connecticut, 28 May 1977. Some of the Photographs seen here are incorporated in the CD release of this show by Rhino Records, Go To Terrapin. Lighting Design by the incomparable Candace Brightman.

40 imagesThe Grateful Dead Concert at Cassell Coliseum, Virginia Polytechnic University, Blacksburg, Virginia on Friday Night 14 April 1978. These photographs are every frame from one roll of color negative film shot during the Second Set including some a spectacular early-on Rhythm Devils experience. Everyone in the band, roadies, crew of every kind, joined into the fun! A rare time indeed. Micky was using some odd looking synthesizer device off to the right. There was a lot of strangeness going on!

6 imagesThe Grateful Dead Concert at William and Mary Hall, William and Mary College, Williamsburg, Virginia on 15 April 1978. My Five Photos. This was a 'film conservation night' what with Blacksburg the night before and front row seats the following night in Huntington. Sorry folks, that's all she wrote. Remember what film cost ? Each roll of pro high speed film and processing = price of two concert tickets in those days. The cost of film shot on this tours weekend run of 3 shows was equal to a months rent :) Huntington is where it was mostly used. Much more to come from that show in the future.

46 imagesThe Grateful Dead Live at Huntington Civic Center, Huntington West Virginia, Sunday 16 April 1978. Most images here have been retouched for dust on the film, adjusted for final brightness & contrast, or cropped from the scanner's output. Other than that they are close to the correct brightness and color final settings. Never use the position on the page sequence number when making an inquiry. Always use the file name which starts with the date-roll number-frame number. Example: 19780416-C16-07. Adding or subtracting from the gallery or by my manually moving images around changes the number on the page but the file name never changes.

1 imageThis is the good frame of only two film exposures taken at this show*. The Grateful Dead in Concert at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, RPI Field House, Troy, NY on May 7, 1978. Image No. 1978-05-07-C22-04 on Kodak High Speed Ektachrome Film pushed a stop in processing. * I was focusing on audio taping during this tour and conserving film for when I could get up close. It wasn't possible to get up close and watch over my taping gear at the booth at this venue.

37 imagesThe Grateful Dead play Labor Day Weekend. Saturday the 2nd of September 1978 at Giant's Stadium, East Rutherford, NJ. Here is the complete selection of images I shot of this great show. Lot's of wide photos capturing the scale of the event and venue. A few details of the Stadium Architecture and Equipment are included and one NYC Skyline shot. Also a 'tripping to the show' shot as we crossed the GWB.

16 imagesGrateful Dead at the New Haven Coliseum on 17 January 1979. Band Photos, Lighting Design shots and Venue Interiors as well. Four photos of Bobby and Jerry have been cropped tighter here and are available as limited edition prints. Venue interior views were shot before and while the audience was entering the building. These shots are part of a New Haven Coliseum (imploded) Collection I have begun to cull from my archives. Venue photos are priced as "rockshots" and are not limited editions.

11 imagesGrateful Dead play Red Rocks in August 1979. The only outside show of three. Rain sent us to McNichols Arena in Denver for the other two of three nights. Morrison, CO on 12 August 1979. Unfortunately the promoters were tough on cameras here. No telephoto or wide angle lenses allowed, only 50mm. In my 45 years of shooting bands in every kind of venue on earth, I never heard that one! Gettin up close also not allowed which I can understand since I could not get credentialed here.

6 imagesGrateful Dead Fall Tour 1979. Photos used in Dave's Pick Volume 47 December 9, 1979, at Kiel Auditorium in St. Louis, Missouri. The photos were taken just a few days before at the Stanley Theater Pittsburgh PA on 11/30 & 12/01

14 imagesThe Grateful Dead in Concert at the Broome County Civic Center, Binghamton NY on May 9, 1979. Photos are taken from a position right behind the lighting and sound booth. The first photo shows exactly why Dan Healy got fed up with tapers mics blocking his view of the band which lead to the creation of the Tapers Section thus legitimizing which was always 'bootleg' recording of Grateful Dead Concerts once and for all time. In my opinion this and the next at Billerica were the turning point shows. Seas of mics in front of the sound and lighting booths. Two shows after this, Amherst, taping was hurriedly banned and remained so until the band came up with the solution.
